Beneath the Turkish Shore

The world's first tunnel below a navigable river opened in 1843, linking Rotherhithe to Wapping. In 1869 the East London Railway Company started running trains through the tunnel. It remains the oldest part of the London Underground network.

The Thames Tunnel was closed in 2007 as part of the refurbishment of the East London Line. It opened to foot traffic for one weekend in March 2010.
